Decorah is a bubbling town that offers extensive off-road biking trails. There are about 20 miles of beautiful biking trails in and around this northeast Iowa hub of activity. The always fantastic trails offer options for both experienced and novice bikers.
Decorah hosts its annual mountain biking event in April. The race started in 1990, with little fanfare. However, the town has proudly held up the biking tradition each year. The trials will usher in their 26th year in 2016, and are open to folks from everywhere. Hence their name, the Time Trials are timed races, which make way through the Decorah Parks System.
What can you expect from the event:
The biking event extends throughout a 9.2-mile course. To avoid congestion, the participants start 60 seconds apart. An average, each biker takes about 80 minutes to complete the track. The fastest time recorded has been 0:47:14.16.
The race participants are grouped into different classes, based on their skill level. Decorah historically averages 61 degrees in April. The potentially pleasant weather can help the riders during the tough race. There is also a free kids trail for families to try out.
The registration tent opens four hours before the event. Participants are offered light refreshments at the registration tent. There is also a drawing for participants. The entry fee for the event is $25. Part of the entry fee is dedicated to the maintenance and improvements of mountain bike trails in Decorah.
Note: Helmets and bikes suitable for off-road terrain are required for anyone riding the trail.
