Looking for winter weather fun? Try your creativity on, at The Clay Studio in Decorah. This charming little studio in historic downtown Decorah, exists to educate adults and kids of all ages about pottery and clay.
The clay studio is still a relatively new addition to Iowa’s art and culture scene, but it's got full on small town support from the Decorah community. Interesting fact? The Clay Studio made one of its most interesting contributions to the community and humanity at large, by hosting artists to make ceramic bones as a part of the international One Million Bones project.
This unconventional gathering space is unique and provides a refreshing experience for guests. Each week, The Clay Studio introduces the fine art of clay to kids and their families, and engages them in this classic craft. Children learn while at play, through individual artistic exploration.
The Clay Studio staff will provide visits to schools and daycare facilities, with their small portable kiln. The kids can engage in clay, glass, and metal clay design all within the comfort of their own school. Children also learn about the science behind kiln firing and pottery.
The Clay Studio offers individual and group visits. For group rates, just gather a group of at least four friends to meet the minimum five person requirement. The studio also hosts pottery themed birthday parties, and any is available for nearly any type of group party you can dream up. Just bring your own refreshments, and wala! You're on your way to a party with a purpose.
The studio also provides membership discounts for both individuals and families. They offer DIY drop-in activities and classes for kids.
Mud Club Night, for example is a fun class for kids aged 5 to 12. The class happens from 6 pm to 8 pm and includes a project-based lesson, art games, and a popcorn/juice snack for every two hours. Parents are encouraged to drop off the kids and have a well-deserved night out!
Afterschool Mud Club is a freestyle, 8-week class, where students create own projects and solve problems. The freestyle classes help kids become more self-reliant and imaginative.
