Harvest Party and 40 Year Anniversary at Turkey River Farm

Turkey River Farm and Communia at the Deep Mountain Retreat Center in Elkport are hosting a Harvest Party and 40 Year Anniversary on Saturday, September 10th from 2:00 – 8:00 PM. Events include a whole hog roast, apple cider pressing, 40 Year Anniversary Hayrack Farm Tour, pollinator and conservation workshop, live music by the Hoot’n Annies String Band, and more! Tickets are $30 per person and admission includes food, events, and a camping spot. Children under 12 are free of charge. There are only 25 tickets left; so please click here to reserve your space.

Turkey River Farm is a small farm in the heart of northeast Iowa that started doing business in January 2016. The farm is owned and managed by Pete Kerns (Chicago suburbs) and Natasha Hegmann (Iowa). Kerns and Hegmann met as FoodCorps service members in Montana, where they connected kids to fresh food to help them grow up healthy. After a few years spent working on Farm-to-School and Farm-to-College projects in Montana, they decided to take their dream of farming back to the Midwest, where they would be closer to family. After living in Montana, Kerns and Hegmann couldn't imagine being surrounded by cropland, and they wanted to create a diverse agricultural ecosystem with veggies, livestock, mushroom cultivation, maple syrup, and more! There is also a lot of support for beginning farmers in Iowa, and Kerns and Hegmann wanted to be able to work with some of their favorite farming organizations, like Practical Farmers of Iowa.

Kerns and Hegmann are vendors at the Marquette, Elkader, and Guttenberg farmers markets and manage 11 CSA shares with hopes to expand their CSA program in the coming years. Their farm offers over 50 vegetable varieties, with a focus on heirloom and open pollinated varieties, as well as shiitake mushrooms and oyster mushrooms, and maple syrup. Turkey River Farm offers fall storage shares of winter vegetables and whole hog, half hog, or 35-pound sampler packs shares of non-GMO, pasture-raised, heritage-breed pork. We hope to see you at our Harvest Party and 40 Year Anniversary!

*Turkey River Farm rents land from Communia for their agricultural enterprises and Kerns and Hegmann are the caretakers for Communia's Deep Mountain Retreat Center. More information can be found here.
