All About Lansing Fish Days: A Community Tradition

Lansing Fish Days is the event of the year in Lansing, Iowa. A tradition dating back to the late 1800’s, it's still one of the most popular events in the entire Northeast Iowa area. Every year, residents and tourists alike, await the second weekend in August.

The weekend is filled with events and activities for the entire family. For the kids, there is the state-sanctioned peddle tractor pull. Children can also spend the weekend jumping and running on large inflatables, rented from Kid Again Inflatables. There is also a kids carnival, a children’s fishing tournament, pony rides, face painting, and many other events kids love!

For the adults there is a 5k/8k walk/run, a beer tent, featuring some of the best brats in the tri-state area. If those items don't interest you, browse the flea markets, eat catfish sandwiches at the VFW, enter the adult fishing tournament, and watch or play co-ed slow pitch softball. The possibilities are endless.

The small town of Lansing basically triples to quadruples their population during the weekend. It is a large homecoming for past locals, and a tourist attraction for those who love a good time. The evenings are full of fun. The local Fire Department hires some of the best bands in the area for entertainment. The music is only interrupted once, on Saturday night, at 9:00-9:30 for an amazing fireworks show over the Mississippi river.

Sunday is always bittersweet. Everyone knows the weekend is coming to an end. Still, folks look to enjoy the last few hours of the celebration. One of the best parades you will ever see is held on Main Street Sunday at 1:00. After the parade, kids flock back down to the festival grounds to pounce a few more times on the giant inflatables. Their parents often head on over to fire department to listen to the classic local music of Mike McAbee, and everyone enjoys just a little more Fish Days.

This year, Lansing Fish Days will be held on, August, 8th, 9th, and 10th. If you have never been, come on over and enjoy a weekend in Lansing. If you have been and have been meaning to get back, this is the year. To all of Fish Day’s regular attendees, see you soon, because the countdown is on!

I love a parade. The 2017 Lansing Fish Days parade is scheduled for Sunday, August 13 at 1 p.m. along Main Street. Lansing will have a big summer, hosting RAGBRAI just a couple weeks prior.
