In honor of the 20th Annual Northeast Artists' Studio Tour, we've interviewed our super talented artists to share how they got where they are and why they make the work that they do.
Our second feature is of painter, print maker, and muralist extraordinaire Carl Homstad. Carl's studio is location #20 at 3112 Springwater Road just north of Decorah. This year's tour is Friday through Sunday, October 13th to the 15th, with all locations on the tour open from 10am to 5pm each day.
Who are you and what kind of art do you make?
I paint oil paintings, and watercolors. I also make woodcut prints and paint murals.
What’s your background? Briefly describe your path of becoming an artist.
I have loved art since I was little and I got an Art major from Luther college, with a year of study in Vienna, Austria.
What do you enjoy most about being an artist? What part of your process do you most enjoying doing?
Creating new artwork.
What inspires you?
Who is your favorite artist or what is your favorite piece of art?
Van Gogh for oils and drawing, Kawase Hasui for woodcuts, Rembrant for etchings and Winslow Homer for watercolors.
What memorable responses have you had to your work?
A doctor wrote me 20 years after getting an artwork from me and told me how he was retiring and it had been in all his offices and it meant so much to him that he had to send me a card.
Describe what we’ll see when we come to your studio. How do we get to your studio?
You will see dozens of artworks, and displays and information about how they where created.
