With limited time before the kids go back to school, many families are looking for something exciting to do close to home this summer. You don’t have to travel too far to have a one of a kind experience. Along with Charles City and Manchester, Elkader is part of Northeast Iowa whitewater parks. Wait, whitewater in Iowa? Yes, and it’s awesome!
Featuring the 22 foot wide Gobbler Wave, Elkader whitewater recreation area offers something for every paddlesport enthusiast. As you step onto the concrete, you admire the gorgeous views of the Turkey River. Upstream, the historic Keystone Bridge and downtown Elkader bids you farewell as you enter the water with your kayak, boogie board, playboat or tube. The soothing sound of rippling water greets you as the first little while is a relaxing trip down the river. Suddenly, the rocks ahead tell you that an adventure is waiting for you. As the water gives you a refreshing splash, you know you’ve come to the right place! Your moves are only limited to your imagination and the flow as low flow is great for surfing and spinning while higher levels offer the opportunity for vertical moves like loops and cartwheels.
While the Whitewater Park is only in Elkader, the Turkey River continues to flow downhill. Plan to make a day on the river and take one of the popular floats from Elkader to Motor Mill or Garber. It all depends on how much time you have! No kayak? No problem! Turkey River Outfitters rents a variety of canoes and kayaks and shuttle services are available back to your entrance destination. For more details, check out Turkey River Outfitters online or on Facebook.
