Inspired by Travels: Decorah Author Jennifer Gipp Talks About Her New Book

Decorah author Jennifer Gipp has loved writing since she was little.  When assigned a one-page writing project in school, she would get excited and write twelve pages!  Although Jennifer is apt to pull out her pen and jot down story ideas in a notebook, her favorite place to write is sitting at her kitchen counter with her laptop.  The natural light streaming in through the windows provides the perfect atmosphere, and  it is in close proximity to her coffee pot!  When hitting a wall with her writing, Jennifer will break things up and go to a local coffee shop to write.

A woman of many talents, it has always been Jennifer’s dream to write a book.  She recently finished her first novel, Breaking Through the Fog, and self-published it with editing assistance from her mother and from a former college professor.   Jennifer will be at Dragonfly Books (112 W Water St., Decorah) at 7 pm on Friday, July 8, 2016.  Jennifer will talk about her new book, her experiences in writing and publishing, and will sign copies of Breaking Through the Fog.

Jennifer, and her husband Barrett, love to travel.  Jennifer states that much of her research for her novel was done by traveling to the locations where the book takes place, or where the characters are from.  In high school, Jennifer had the opportunity to study abroad in New Zealand when the America’s Cup was taking place in Auckland.  While living there, Jennifer learned about yachting and New Zealand culture.  During college, Jennifer studied in the south of France, where the character Jonathan learns to sail.   Her husband used to live in the Bay Area near San Francisco, and was a wonderful tour guide to Jennifer, showing her many of the neighborhoods where Breaking Through the Fog takes place.   The two of them celebrated their first anniversary by going to London, where the character Claudia is from.  Jennifer says it was inspiring to go through photos and notes from their travels while writing the novel, and to tie all her favorite places together through the characters.

A native of Platteville, WI, Jennifer Gipp is an Optometrist and the Optometry Residency & Internship Director at Gundersen Health System in Decorah, IA. Breaking Through the Fog is Jennifer Gipp’s first novel. Insightful and uplifting, Jennifer offers a unique perspective on life, love, relationships, and the resilience of the human spirit.

This event is sponsored by Dragonfly Books at 112 W. Water St., Decorah and is free and open to the public.
