According to the 2012 Agricultural Census conducted by USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, dairy is recorded as the fifth largest agricultural business in Iowa with about 1,400 dairy farms in the state generating $4 billion a year in economic activity. And, nearly 99% of all the dairy farms in Northeast Iowa are family-owned.
The annual Breakfast on the Farm open house schedule includes face-to-face conversations with farmers. This year, like years past, Northeast Iowa Dairy Foundation will be serving up a special breakfast, complete with Dad's Belgian Waffles, sausage, and of course all of your favorite delicious dairy products including milk, cheese, yogurt and ice cream.
The best part? Everything has been produced and processed right here in Northeast Iowa.
There will be plenty of activities to keep you busy on the farm including:
- Guided tram tours around the farm
- Hand milking a cow
- Petting calves at the petting zoo
- Storytime with the Dairy Princess
- Bouncing in the cow inflatable
- Playing in the corn pools
- Watching robots milk cows
- Checking out the Iowa Dairy Museum and Hall of Breeds
- Visiting several educational exhibits
The 9th annual Breakfast on the Farm event is hosted by Northeast Iowa Dairy Foundation in partnership with the Midwest Dairy Association, Iowa State Dairy Association, Western Iowa Dairy Alliance, Northeast Iowa Community College and various Agriculture and commodity sponsors and supporters.
