Now that the hype of the holiday season is wearing down, winter in Northeast Iowa can sometimes feel unbearable. Its cold, it’s long, and it’s easy to wish for sunshine and warmer weather. But Decorah has so many fantastic activities, adventures, and opportunities to take advantage of this time of the year! From local businesses to community-wide events, there’s fun for the whole family. Here are just a few of the ways you can shake off the winter blues with a visit to Decorah.
1. Take classes at Arthaus:
Arthaus offers year-round classes! Head over to downtown Decorah to “brush up” on your acrylics skills at their Cork & Canvas Class happening Friday, February 9th at Rubaiyat. Your first drink is even on the house! Or, try Life Drawing Model Sessions! There’s no experience needed. Arthaus is also offering a Making with Maui and Moana class where you can learn to make paper flowers, printmake tribal tattoos, and more!
2. Venture over to Vesterheim and attend a Koselig event!:
In Scandinavian countries, some say that that empathy is the key to high levels of happiness. Banish the winter blues at Vesterheim and with Cake Breaks and cozy Nordic Noir Movie Nights. Every Wednesday this winter, you can eat treats and learn all about community koselig at Vesterheim’s weekly events. They’re open to the whole community. To really get a feel for koselig, attend a Nordic Movie Night! Each film will feature unsettling crime films from Scandinavia. Sit back, settle in, and stay cozy!
