Fall is in the air and Decorah’s Oneota Valley Community Orchestra (OVCO) is excited for their inaugural Symphony Sampler Fundraiser, an elegant evening of fine food, music, and drink, to be held on Friday, September 30th at 6:30 pm at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 701 Iowa Ave, Decorah. This fundraising event will feature chamber music performances by small ensembles from the OVCO membership. Join the OVCO for music and for hors d’oeuvres, desserts, beverages, and an auction. The Symphony Sampler is catered by Carina Cavagnaro of Whisk and Dug Road Inn.
The evening begins at 6:30 pm with brass music and hors d’oeuvres on the veranda, weather permitting. Moving inside, the Symphony Sampler continues with desserts and music for string quartet, woodwinds, lute, varieties of fiddling, and more. Eating, drinking, auctioning, and socializing will be interspersed between the performances.
The Oneota Valley Community Orchestra is in their third season. Under the direction of founder Matthew Cody, the OVCO presents live classical music to the residents of the Oneota Valley in Northeast Iowa, promotes music education, and provides the opportunity for amateur and professional musicians to perform great masterpieces of music.
In addition to the Symphony Sampler, the Oneota Valley Community Orchestra will perform three concerts during the 2016-17 concert season. The first concert, Masterworks I: Season 3 Premiere, is on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7:30 pm, and features guest soloist Miko Kominami on piano with Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, along with pieces by Bernstein and Copland. The second concert, Masterworks II: Music that Tells a Story, is on Sunday, March 12 at 3:00 pm. This concert program includes Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, narrated by Kristen Underwood and Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony 6 in F. Masterworks III: Season 3 Finale is on Sunday, May 7 at 3:00 pm. Collaborating with the Decorah Chorale, the season finale program includes Mozart’s Requiem.
Tickets for the OVCO Symphony Sampler are $35 and are available at Dragonfly Books, the Oneota Community Food Co-op and the Oneota Valley Community Orchestra website. Purchase your ticket now, as there is a limited quantity of tickets available.
