Allamakee County is a quilter’s delight. The county contains stores specializing in quilting fabrics and supplies. Annual competitions and displays allow quilters to exhibit their wares. Block of the Month Clubs permit quilters to socialize with like-minded creative talents.
Each October, the Allamakee County Economic Development and Tourism Board will host a quilt display in the New Albin Community Center. A section of the show is reserved each year to display antique quilts that have been passed on through many generations. Demonstrations, refreshments, raffles, and vendors add to the occasion. Proceeds benefit the New Albin Library fund.
Some of the finest quilts this side of the Mississippi compete in the Allamakee County Fair for ribbons each year. In 2015, a quilting trunk show exhibit was held at the fair showcasing oriental and South American quilt designs by Pam Kerndt. The 2016 fair schedule should be posted soon on the website.
