Vernon Springs Dam in Howard County was built in early 1850. Mill Pond is an integral part of the dam and is located at the top. The Mill Pond of Vernon Springs is extensively used for fishing. The Pond offers exciting visuals of the region with an abundance recreational activities.
Recently, the County undertook a project to turn the dam into rapids. The project is intended to reduce the hazards due to floods. Rapids are beneficial to the ecosystem in the area. In this project, the upstream and downstream rivers will be connected to create 300-foot long rapids.
Fishing is an extremely popular form of recreation in this area. Rapids will improve tourism in the region, with a different view of the Turkey River. The area also offers unique wildlife making this a must-see spot in Howard County. The new project will improve the scenery around the area.
What you can expect from the event
Howard County Cancer Association (HoCA) is conducting an ice-fishing tourney at the Vernon Mill Pond in Cresco County. The tourney offers a good fashion winter fun and is an excellent family event. The pond provides plenty of fishes during this time. The contest is a length-based competition, which means that the winners will be selected based on the length of the fish caught and not on the weight of the fish.
The registration of the fishing tournament starts at 11 am at Cresco County Club. The top-prize is at least $300. Since HoCA ice fishing is a family event, food is available for purchase by visitors and participants.
Tickets: The event price is $20 for adults. Children 12 & under are free of charge.
