Art After Dark 5K Glow Run/Walk to Support Youth Art Programs!

Show your glow and support the arts at Guttenberg Gallery and Creativity Center’s third annual Art After Dark 5K Glow Run/Walk on Friday, Nov. 3. "Proceeds from this event always support Guttenberg Gallery and Creativity Center's after school art program, which is offered at no cost to local children grades four and up," said organization director Cindy Olsen. The nonprofit's mission is to provide high-quality community arts experiences for all ages in a safe, positive environment.

Guttenberg Gallery and Creativity Center was formed in 2007 and has given away after school art program scholarships to each and every student who has requested one since the program was started nine years ago. The program provides students with arts opportunities often lacking in today's schools, especially in rural Iowa, and hires local artists to teach their craft to youth through the program. Homeschooled children are welcome, as are all public and private school students grades 4-12. This year, the program includes one and two-day workshops with course content like leather stamping, pouring paint, liquid ceramics, typogrpahy, alcohol ink, weaving, wheel pottery, painting and drawing, warm glass fusion, cooking classes from around the world, and more!

New shirts this year were designed by JMJ Screen Printing and feature a classic comic created by artist Roy Lichtenstein. The 1964 oil and magna painting depicts a blonde woman woefully speaking into a telephone as a speech bubble from her red lips states, "Oh, Jeff... I love you too... but..." The glow run shirts parody this as the woman completes her sentence with, "But I've got to glow!" JMJ has sponsored this year's event, as has Thrivent Financial.

Participants will run or walk along the Mississippi River in Guttenberg, and afterward are sure to enjoy the 'after glow' party with a run-themed photo booth pizza, cookies, drinks and music! The gallery will offer special sales for registrants. Those who would like to pick up their shirts ahead of time to decorate them with glow in the dark paint and other items are welcome to do so.

Entry fee ($25) includes registration, meal and drink after the run, and a glow item of your choice to wear during the event. This event is family friendly and dog-friendly, and participants are encouraged to glow up their attire! Click here to sign up.

What a fantastic event. It should make a great, moving sight -- like a neon caterpillar -- winding along the Mississippi. And the money will go to arts programs. Win-win.
