With the holidays around the corner and family home, many people venture off the beaten path to St. Lucas in northeast Iowa to the White House Supper Club owned by Jann and John Kuehner to celebrate with friends and family. They have been known for their fabulous food, especially steak and lobster, all the way back to when Jann’s parents, Mark and the late Marge Mihm opened the place in 1965 and the tradition of great food and service has continued with Jann and John, who took over in 1978.
It’s almost like the theme song of the old TV show Cheers, “Where everyone knows your name and always glad you came” because they treat their customers like family and that is why on almost any given evening the place is packed.
There is not much else in the town with the population of about 175 people that would draw such a crowd to this pretty scenic town. But the draw is simple. Tradition. They are known for great food and great service and that keeps people coming back!. And it sure doesn’t hurt that they serve up a delicious relish tray with dip and garlic toast before your meal. My husband like on Saturday night’s when they have prime rib, and I like their rib eye or jumbo shrimp. They are also known for having great lobster. But to begin with, I especially enjoy their peach daiquiri that John makes! Next time you are there, make sure you try one and you will find you just may find have to have at least one each time you come, they are that addicting!
Prices? Not bad! Filet mignon is $15.95 for a 7-ounce and $19.95 for a 10-ounce portion. Choice of potato and vegetable, relish tray, garlic toast and crackers are included. My husband loves their prime rib, which is also a good value.
At one time Mark Mihm owned the restaurant, jewelry store, and gas station and all are still here. Jann’s sister, Pat Ridout now owns the jewelry story across the street and sometimes they collaborate, with many surprise marriage proposals made alongside a special dish thanks to the kitchen staff and owners. The atmosphere is ripe with romance anyway with the darken rooms and candlelight. Perfect for a first date, engagement, anniversary, or just out for a special night with friends. Holidays are always a special time for the White House, which with their remodeling have made a party room for 50 and you can reserve ahead by calling 563-778-2291 if you prefer to let them do the cooking for those special occasions.
Duane Boyer, is the Kuehner’s right hand man and only full time employee, which is important when they have been known to serve up to 500 people in a night. Not bad for a small town! They have up to three cooks on weekends just to keep up with their demand. The Kuehner’s daughter, Jill Heins finds time to waitress part time, along other main servers on weekends is Duane’s sister Joann Boyer and Missy Elsbernd. Helping John bartend is Christina Patrick. They are a close knit group who has been working together for years and the service is great.
Many times the place is full which gives you time to bring on the holiday cheer by enjoying a beer, mixed drink or their fabulous margaritas or daiquiris with your friends. Lately they have started making peach daiquiris and once you have one, you may want another!
Bring your family and friends for a night of relaxation from the hectic holiday season or book the party room and let them do the work. They are located at 104 W. Main St. In St. Lucas, Iowa and hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 5 to 9 p.m. and also Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for lunch.
If it’s your birthday don’t be surprised if they stroll through with the lights off just to come to your table with ice cream and a candle singing happy birthday because they go out of their way to make you feel special. And that is why we and many others keep coming back through the years.
