Christmas in Calmar this Thursday: December 5

It’s starting to feel a lot like Christmas, especially in Calmar. Wherever we wander, with the chill in the air and holiday lights up in the town and homes, everyone is getting ready for the Christmas in Calmar event, and we want to invite you! What better way to kick off the holiday season then to come and enjoy Calmar, especially during the festivities Thursday, December 5th! Come hungry, as Calmar rolls out it’s holiday carpet with free food, drinks, free horse drawn buggy rides, holiday treats, and entertainment. Not to mention, of course, the big draw for the kiddos with their long lists is a chance to talk to Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus! The event starts at 4 p.m., when Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive into town with Santa’s helpers, Jim Dotzenrod and his horses. Sorry, the reindeer are resting up for their big trip, so Dotzenrod is helping Santa out again this year.

As you stroll around Calmar, you may even see the Grinch and you will have fun as he teases you with your bags full of holiday cheer. The kids will smile as they get their photos with Mr. & Mrs. Claus at the Wiltgen. And take a minute to remember that Jesus is the reason for the season, by observing the Live Nativity Scene at Winco Farm Supply (yes, they will have animals there just like a stable—just more of an Iowa Nativity Scene including cows), carols by the South Winn Choir perform at Heying Lumber at 6 pm where you can get your free carriage ride, Elf Workshop so the kids can create their own ornaments at South Winn Insurance, Candy Tractor Shop a Economy Ag, holiday dancers at Gundersen Lutheran Clinic (6 & 6:30) along with hot apple cider and cookies, gift, get your wrapping done at Bullwacker Logistics, books and candy at Calmar Courier. There will be lots of sweet treats along the way like caramel corn, candy coins, cookie decorating, cholocate dipped candy canes. yummy hot chili to warm you at WhistleStop Antiques (Train Depot), Christmas tea and cookies at Nana’s House B&B, snacks at Whiskey Grove & Leinie's Lodge, chicken noodle soup on Main Street by the firemen to keep you warm as you continue your way through town along with City of Camar caramel corn, cookie decorating at the library and Security Bank, chocolate dipped candy canes at The Train Station and much more including the new business in town called the Flower Pot.

As the evening’s festivities close, with full little tummies ready for bed, stop and watch the lighting of the of the star on Calmar’s Christmas Tree at the Train Depot/WhistleStop Antiques at 7 p.m. on your way home. Remember this Thursday, December 5th for a family fun filled night in downtown Calmar! You may want to make this a family holiday tradition!
