Birthday kids and parents: there lies a secret place for exploring, creating, and celebrating here in Decorah: The Clay Studio's downstairs hideaway.
Beneath The Clay Studio, down a wooden stairway you'll find a secret hideout. A rustic backdrop of limestone and wood, with a doorway to a private creek. Rachelle Branum of The Clay Studio in Decorah, has molded a gem into the historic building that houses the main level studio.
Underneath the studio – certainly not a basement – is a diagonal room with two sliding barn doors on each wall. Light floods in through the doors and windows to create great natural lighting with little need to turn on the overhead lights. Through the doorway you'll find a natural courtyard and creek, with just enough room for kids to roam and explore.
When my oldest daughter turned seven, she wanted to go someplace special with her friends. (Thankfully, Chuck E. Cheese is not a local option.) I kept the location of the party a secret from our birthday girl until we walked there after school. With shared anticipation I watched the kids follow the balloons down the stairway and step through the doors into their own private birthday party hideout.
For an activity, owner Rachelle Branum had the girls (six of them, total) paint ceramic boxes plus a combined “Happy Birthday” plate. The kids gobbled up the cupcakes and finger food, then were off exploring the creek in no time. No need for additional party games since they were having such a great time in the water.
We comfortably fit six girls and three adults into the indoor space. Though not yet outfitted for cold weather, the hideaway will accommodate three out of the four seasons. If you are looking for a birthday party venue during the week or on weekends, this is the place.
For that matter, the Clay Studio's downstairs hideaway is a great space to rent for ANY small gathering. We adults need a secret party hideout as well, cupcakes and all.
