Gratitude and Giving in Guttenberg Nov. 25-26

With families gathering for Thanksgiving, the Guttenberg community has a lot planned to entertain all ages in the days following the holiday. Many shops will be open with Black Friday sales for serious shoppers, but there are opportunities for fun all weekend.

On Saturday, Nov. 25, Guttenberg merchants celebrate Small Business Saturday. According to American Express, which sponsors marketing materials for business owners and promotes the event nationwide, there are 266,382 small businesses in operation across the state. In 2014, nearly half of all employees in the state were working for small businesses - a great reason to support those businesses by shopping locally all year long and especially over the holidays.

Sunday, Nov. 26 kicks off with a waffle and bacon breakfast at the Riverview Cafe. Continuing the fun, retailers in Guttenberg will host open houses throughout the town with sales, refreshments, and holiday cheer. A bazaar will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the lower level of the municipal building. Roughly 25 vendors will be offering homemade crafts and direct sales items, with proceeds to benefit the Wave of the Future - a project for building a new pool in Guttenberg.

In addition to supporting local businesses, charitable efforts like the holiday bazaar are woven throughout the holiday weekend. A holiday tour of homes fundraiser for the Clayton Ridge class of 2019 will be held Sunday from 3-6 p.m. in Guttenberg and Garnavillo. Tickets can be purchased from members of the junior class, the high school office or at the houses on the tour. Seven homes will be welcoming visitors as part of the tour.

Evening entertainment will be provided by Backwater at Lakeside Ballroom in Guttenberg. Doors will open at 4 p.m. for food, games and a raffle, and Backwater will perform from 6-9 p.m. The family-friendly event will include games like Twister, hula hooping, beach ball, and even a bean bag toss tournament. A photo booth featuring local athletes will offer youth a chance to meet their role models - and the whole event is another fundraiser for the Wave of the Future.

Thanksgiving is a time to feel gratitude, reflect on what's important, and take the time to give back. The community of Guttenberg offers opportunities to spend time with family focusing on all of the above, so don't miss our holiday celebrations!
