On August 8th, at 1pm, Green Iowa Americorps will be hosting a cleanup of the Upper Iowa River in Decorah, Iowa, starting at Will Baker Park. The group of volunteers will be floating down the Upper Iowa in canoes and kayaks, picking up trash and debris as they float the winding waterways.
The Upper Iowa River is a popular attraction in the summer in Decorah, and tends to collect a lot of trash from this and from runoff from the many streams that flow into it. If this builds up in the river it can be somewhat of an eyesore, and also harmful to the environment. The recent Nordic Fest activity and canoe race has also contributed greatly to the buildup of trash along this beautiful stretch of river.
Come help us, the Green Iowa AmeriCorps team in Decorah, clean up the part of the river that runs through Decorah by taking a ride down the river in a canoe, or kayak (provided by Luther College). The clean up will take place on August 8th. We will all meet at Will Baker Park across from Will Baker Landing at 1:00pm, and access the river there. We will then canoe to Trout Run Park where transportation will be provided back to Will Baker Park.
We recommend that you bring water, sunscreen, and to wear an old pair of closed toed shoes. There will be extra water, sunscreen, and bug spray if you need it. We will also provide garbage bags, and we will recycle as much as we can of what we find at Winneshek County Recycling. Canoes/Kayaks will be first come first serve. If you have your own, and don't mind using it, bring it with.
Thanks, and see you there!
