A harvest dinner party with a gourmet menu will be held Friday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. at Guttenberg Gallery and Creativity Center. For foodies and history buffs alike, this dinner is sure to delight. A silent auction benefitting the nonprofit's after-school art program will also be held.
Guttenberg Gallery and Creativity Center is located in scenic downtown Guttenberg, Iowa, a small river town alongside the mighty Mississippi River and right along the Great River Road. The three-story limestone Albertus Building was originally built by a German immigrant and his family in 1852. Dinner will be held in the gallery located in the adjacent two-story limestone building, which was completed in 1858.
Since its completion in 1855, the Albertus building has been used for numerous commercial and residential purposes including a hotel, clothing store, grocery store, drug store, meat market and cigar factory. Upper stories of the building were primarily residential. Currently on the National Register of Historic Buildings, a major renovation was completed in 1971. Historic records indicate that the Albertus building housed the Ratskellar Bar and Cafe in the cellar until 1975. Currently, the upper floors of this building are private residences and the lower level houses two shops.
