Iowa writer Kali VanBaale will be in Decorah on Thursday, September 22 through Saturday, September 24, 2016. While in Decorah, Kali will conduct an author reading at Dragonfly Books, will be the featured artist at ArtHaus’ awesome and not-to-be-missed Poetry Slam, and will be one of the featured presenters at the Luther College Writers Festival.
Kali VanBaale will read from her latest novel, The Good Divide, on Thursday, September 22 at 7:00 pm at Dragonfly Books (112 W Water St, Decorah). Set in the lush countryside of Wisconsin, we meet protagonist Jean Krenshaw in The Good Divide. Jean is the ideal 1960’s dairy farm wife. She cooks, sews, raises children, and plans an annual July 4th party for friends and neighbors. When her brother-in-law Tommy marries leery newcomer Liz, Jean is forced to confront a ten-year-old family secret and the unresolved death of a young woman. Vivid and intriguing, The Good Divide (Midwestern Gothic 2016) explores the inner world of desires when faced with the realities of life. Immediately after her talk, Kali will chat with attendees and sign copies of her book. This author event at Dragonfly Books is free and open to the public.
Following the reading and book signing at Dragonfly Books, Kali VanBaale will be the featured artist at the ArtHaus Poetry Slam. This energetic spoken-word event has become so popular that ArtHaus now regularly holds the Slam at Decorah's Elks Lodge (402 W. Main St.) to accommodate a larger crowd. Beginning at 8:30 pm on Thursday, September 22, the ArtHaus Poetry Slams welcome all to participate in the non-competitive "Original Voices" (3 minutes or less of your own poetry) or the "Slam" (a good-natured competition complete with prizes and Applause-o-Meter). Call ArtHaus at 563-382-5440 or signup online to perform. The Poetry Slams are often likely-to-sell-out events so come early and stay late! Recommended for adults, ages 16 and up. Admission is $5.00; $3.00 for students.
Finally, Kali VanBaale will be a participating presenter at the Luther College Writers Festival, held in Decorah on Friday, September 23 to Saturday, September 24. In an interview with fellow writer Donald Quist, Kali admitted to being a “crazy, super fan of Jane Hamilton.” Which is wonderful, as author Jane Hamilton will also be in Decorah for the Luther College Writers Festival!
