Film Festival Time in Dubuque!

YES! Film Festival Time in Dubuque!

The Julien Dubuque International Film Festival is April 23-27 this year. The festival's honorary chair Abigail Breslin will be on hand during the festival, but we've got plenty of work to do before she and the two dozen plus international filmmakers jet in.

Being part of a festival like this is pretty extraordinary. Last year, the festival was given the designation of being one of the best film festivals out there. I've had the pleasure of being on the film selection committee again this year and the films are exciting and wonderful and interesting. We had so many submissions this year, not even I was able to see them all. So just like you, I will get to see some films that are a complete mystery too.

Anyone looking to do something interesting and unexpected should consider doing more than just come to the festival - they could accept a teal colored tee-shirt and signup for a chance to be part of the festival's volunteers. Volunteerism is a great way to join in to a community, a simple way to create new relationships, and a satisfactory way to expand our personal bubbles.  You can staff a box office and sell tickets, you can be a sight host and greet people as they arrive at the screening sites, or you can be one of the runners who do not know what they will be doing but are eager to see who shows up.

During the first year of the festival, I was staffing the box office and had a chance to chat with Peter Riegert and Kate Mulgrew while they waited for the ride to the airport. Last year, I had the chance to chat director Rob Underhill and shared meals with directors Varda Hardy and Chris Arnold. This year I am looking forward to meeting cast and crew members from the Field of Dreams, but more on that later.

Fascinated enough to consider joining the film team?

Volunteers will next gather on Monday night, April 14 at 6:30PM, Hotel Julien, on Main Street in Dubuque, IA.

If you would be interested, in getting to be part of making the festival amazing in year three, join the volunteer team.
