Kaffee 1858 Offers a Unique Way to Celebrate With Your Valentine!

Painting with your Valentine may not sound like the typical dinner and drinks date, and it isn’t! “We’ve all seen couples seated across from each other, dining quietly while looking into their phones, and I can promise you that will not be the case if you join us for Canvas Uncorked on Feb. 8,” said painting instructor Molly Moser. Moser has been teaching Canvas Uncorked acrylic painting workshops for three years through Guttenberg Gallery and Creativity Center, a nonprofit gallery and community art studio. Recently, she’s begun holding a monthly class at Kaffee 1858, Guttenberg’s newest restaurant and supporter of the arts.

A place for sharing food, drink, and conversation, Kaffee 1858 and Public House is located in the historic building at 7 Schiller Street. Owner Sara Pattison subscribes to a motto quoted from Vincent Van Gogh: “In my painting of the Night Café, I’ve tried to express the idea that a café is a place where you can ruin yourself, go mad, commit crimes.” She even went so far as to have the quote painted on her building. Pattison and business partner Becky Hefel attended a Van Gogh exhibit in Chicago, where Hefel noticed the quote. "What struck me about it was the fact that whenever I travel I find a local coffee house with a quirky atmosphere conducive to eclectic thinking, food, and fun," Hefel told The Press. "We want to have that place we look for when we travel here in Guttenberg."

That place truly exists now in Kaffee 1858, where weekly trivia nights, roundtable discussions, cooking classes and painting classes are becoming the norm in the restaurant. This month’s painting is a simple, seasonal piece that can be personalized with just a little adjustment. A sweater-and-mitten-clad Mr. or Ms. offers a red mug of hot coffee (or hot chocolate, depending on your own tastes), with floating marshmallows shaped as hearts. “Or not shaped as hearts – artists’ choice,” said Moser. “The ‘latte art’ is the perfect place for a couple’s initials, memorializing and important date, or leaving the romance out altogether!”

Moser has a Bachelor's degree in studio art with an emphasis in painting. First-time painter? No problem. She'll guide you through a successful work of art you can hang in your home or give as a gift to that special someone this February 14.
