Sunday, May 3rd kicked off our first Co-Ed/Co-Led ride for Decorah Bicycles and due to the positive feedback, we will continue to have a Co-Ed/Co-Led ride the first Sunday of the month. (Unless rain- then postponed to the following Sunday.) Due to popularity we will have two regular Sunday rides: Travis will now lead a ride for the guys while I lead the FWD ride-unless there is rain, of course!
Let me say how excited I am to see people get together and enjoy the trails- on this particular ride we had a fellow join us for his first outing on the local trails. He had purchased a bike during our Spring Sale and had been waiting for the right opportunity since. This was a perfect opportunity to lead a person out on trails he didn't even know existed!
That is one of the things that we hear from people- not knowing where the trails are at or how they connect. There is definitely a concern around getting lost that can deter people from exploring the local singletrack. Having a led ride can assist those new to our trails with figuring out where they are and how they can connect future ride routes for themselves.
Our aim with the rides is simple- make it an enjoyable experience for everyone. We go the pace of the newest rider, keep it casual, and no-drop. Our aim is to make anyone new that joins our rides feel welcome and encouraged- because we've all been there- we've all been the new rider at some point.
It was a great time, people got to be introduced to other riders, and we all had fun! The benefit of a co-led ride is if we have a newer rider that needs to leave the ride early- one of us can go back to the shop with them so they don't have to ride back solo. That leaves another lead ready to take the reigns and keep the group moving along.
Seeing riders of varying levels riding together and having fun even tho we were not "tearing it up" was awesome! Our common thread is simple- we love riding our bikes and it's getting out there with like minded people that make the experience special.
Don't worry about being the "new rider" or "holding us back"- our group rides are open for any rider at any level. You have multiple people to talk to and learn from! It was really insightful to talk to others who have been riding for longer than I have- and to glean from their experiences.
Don't hesitate! Join us on Sundays if the weather is favorable, I promise you won't be disappointed!
