After opening in 2002, Deer Run Resort has turned into a relaxing campers getaway for those on the run. “Our visitors most enjoy relaxing by a campfire, getting away, seeing the beautiful scenery in northeast Iowa, along with walking, biking, golfing, shopping, fishing, and canoeing and kayaking the Turkey River,” says owner Doris Moyna. “They also appreciate how clean and neat our resort is and the spacious sites.”
Deer Run Resort is open April 15 – October 15. There are 81 65-85 foot concrete pads with full hook-up and 30/50 amp, a state-of-the art shower house/storm shelter, fire pits with firewood sold on site, and Wi-Fi. There are daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal sites, and if you book six nights, you will get the seventh night free of charge.
A quaint limestone cottage at the end of the street is popular with snowmobilers, hunters, fishers, and XC skiers. The cottage sleeps up to six, includes a fully furnished kitchen, bath, and loft, has air-conditioning, heating, and is open year-round.
Special events include fishing weekend at the campground lake (Saturday after Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend) and trick-or-treating with kids games and wagon rides in late September.
The resort is located along the River Bluffs Scenic Byway, making it a popular getaway for motorcycle groups, and is a mere 20 minutes away from the Mississippi River, a national landmark and the fourth longest river in the world.
Destinations within walking distance include: the Elkader swimming pool, playgrounds, Frisbee golf course, tennis courts, basketball courts, sand volleyball, baseball/softball diamonds at the City Park, hiking and biking on Pony Hollow Trail, canoe and kayak rentals near the whitewater course or for a leisurely float down to historic Motor Mill. Downtown Elkader contains numerous restaurants, museums, shopping, and a historical movie theater.
