The seventies ushered in Disco and the Swedish group ABBA was popular among the youngsters of that time. Three Cresco, IA natives, Karen, Debi, and Carol loved ABBA back then, and with the popularity of the Broadway Play and Movie, Mama Mia, these three, now "seniors" decided to re-live the era.
In January 2011, they got together and started practicing routines to the songs from the movie soundtrack. They called themselves "Mama's Senior Dancing Queens” because they were all over 50. The first of many performances was at the Shellhorn Bar in Brownsville, Minnesota. That summer, they had a float in the Lime Springs and Cresco parades. They were building steam and had six songs and dances memorize. However, that fall, Karen opted out of the group. That’s when I, Cindy, joined the group. It was perfect timing, as I was looking for something fun to do, as I was soon to be an empty-nester. What a wonderful time we are having! Our goal is to re-visit the past and bring smiles to the faces of as many people as possible through our dance routines. In the past two years, the group has performed at Hospital Christmas parties, class reunions, and countless Asisted Living and Nursing Homes.
We have performed in LaCrosse, and Onalaska, in Wisconsin, Brownsville, La Cresent, Rochester and St. Charles in MN. Cresco, Charles City, Mason City, Britt, Osage, and West Union, in Iowa. There have been times that we do more than one show in a day. Which is not bad for a bunch of old ladies! We tell the audiences that the time we take to change outfits is necessary for us to catch our breath and we feel safest at nursing homes, because oxygen is available! With all that said, I am very excited about the opportunities that 2014 will bring. Our first performance of the year will be on the Rochester Eagles Cancer Telethon tomorrow morning. We performed last year, and were invited back this year. Please watch us on KTTC, channel 10, on Sunday January 19th. We will be on around 10:00 AM. Then please let us know what you think! Thanks!
