In honor of the 20th Annual Northeast Artists' Studio Tour, we've interviewed our super talented artists to share how they got where they are and why they make the work that they do.
Up next, is painter Jennifer Jones. Jennifer's studio is location #8 at 1104 Walnut Street in Decorah, IA. This year's tour is Friday through Sunday, October 13th to the 15th, with all locations on the tour open from 10am to 5pm each day.
Who are you and what kind of art do you make?
I am primarily an oil painter these days but have been known to dabble in sculpture, ceramics, and photography. I can turn just about anything into a creative outlet in a pinch.
What’s your background? How did you become an artist?
As a child, I had the notion of being an artist "when I grow up" and still do. I majored in Studio Art at Macalester College as an undergrad and went on to University of Iowa to obtain my teaching credentials after that. I worked in galleries on both coasts for a number of years and after more years of this and that after relocating to Iowa, I found myself at a place I could truly dedicate my time to and efforts into art making. This shift has been working for our family for the last few years so I happily just keep rolling with it and marvel how lucky I am.
What do you enjoy most about being an artist? What part of your process do you most enjoying doing?
All of it!
What inspires you?
The whole of nature, conversations with my children and the great lessons of the universe.
Who is your favorite artist or what is your favorite piece of art?
This question is impossible for me to answer, I love so many. For the record, I don't have a favorite color, either.
What memorable responses have you had to your work?
"I've never seen anything quite like this..." is my favorite.
What will we see when we come to your studio? How do we get there?
My home/studio is located in the Breuning addition above Phelps Park. This year's offerings are truly a mixed bag. Visitors will find large and small works of varied subjects. As ever I will have a number of underwater swimmers and dancers available the largest is 6'x 8'. I also have branched off a bit from the swimmers to create abstractions, landscapes, divers, and......wait for it......MERMAIDS! This seems like a good place to not the that I will be offering 10% discount on any displayed piece for those who share the key phrase, "I believe in mermaids!" during the Tour.
