OVCO Brass Quintet to Perform on September 30

The beautiful and brilliant sounds of the OVCO Brass Quintet will be heard on Friday evening, September 30, as a part of Symphony Sampler, the Oneota Valley Community Orchestra's inaugural fundraising event. The Symphony Sampler begins at 6:30 pm, and is held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 701 Iowa Ave, Decorah. The members of the OVCO Brass Quintet are Phil Iversen and Brita Carbonell on trumpet, Jon Cowan on French horn, Jeff Leeper on trombone, and Dan Raney on tuba.

Like many of the volunteer musicians playing with the OVCO, the members of the OVCO Brass Quintet are all extremely experienced, yet amateur, musicians. Representing diverse careers, a similar trait between the five members is their passion for excellence and lifelong playing. From their beginnings playing with youth orchestras, all-state orchestras and bands, and high school orchestras, jazz bands, pit orchestras, marching bands, and ensembles, the members' experiences also include playing with the Fort Dodge, La Crosse, Central Iowa, Milwaukee, and Sheboygan Symphony orchestras. Many have also played in the pit orchestra for Decorah's New Minowa Community Theatre; Jeff holds the record having played for close to 20 shows. Two members have played internationally; Jon with the Comox Summer Orchestra in British Columbia, Canada and Phil with a community band in Lyngby, Denmark.

In addition to playing tuba, Dan Raney is an accomplished composer and arranger. He has done arranging and composing for Celebration Iowa, Luther College ensembles, and numerous area churches and community groups.

All of the members of the OVCO Brass Quintet are looking forward to sharing their talents for the orchestra fundraiser. Having an orchestra in a community the size of Decorah is remarkable, yet the OVCO cannot exist without support from the community they proudly serve. Please come out and show your support! Phil reflects that he "grew up listening to orchestra music at home and at concerts at C.Y. Stephens Auditorium on the Iowa State University campus" and that he "enjoys the opportunity to play the great masterworks that [he's] heard so many times." Your support for the OVCO through the Symphony Sampler allows the OVCO to ignite the love of the classics in the next generation of musicians.

The OVCO Brass Quintet will be performing the following selections:

* Alleluia - Mozart

* Canzona La Spiritata #4 - Gabrielli

* The Last Spring - Grieg

*  Sheep May Safely Graze - Bach

* Contrapunctus #1 - Bach

In addition to the OVCO Brass, other performers include the OVCO Board Quartet, an early music ensemble, fiddle and cello solos, and other selections. Join the OVCO for an elegant evening of hors d'oeuvres, desserts, beverage, and good company with chamber music provided by the members of the orchestra.  Food catered by Carina Cavagnaro of Whisk.
