The Practical Farm of Iowa Field Day event will feature local farmers Gary and Scott Wedemeier. The duo will discuss the process of transitioning their Northeast Iowa farm and dairy ranch to an organic-based farm. You'll hear all about how this father and son were moved by both the financial and environmental benefits of moving away from chemical-based cultivation.
“The move to organic has generated more income, as intended,” notes Scott. “We were also concerned about the possible effects of applying chemical products to our crops and land.”
The Wedemeiers own Grassway Organic Farm near Maynard, where they raise corn, roughage, and an assortment of cover crops with a group of 172 cows on around 1,100 acres of land. The family also has a little crowd of sheep and pigs.
The Wedemeiers began their organic farming method in 2015 and got their organic accreditation in October 2017. In November 2017, they became a part of Organic Valley Cooperative.
Gary and Scott will talk about their rotational organic farming and their medium-scale dairy, and how they moved both their plantation and livestock farming method to organic at the event. The event will be held in conjunction with Iowa Organic Association and it is free to attend.
RSVPs must be sent for the lunch by email to Debra Boekholder at firstname.lastname@example.org or through phone at (515) 232-5661.
