Being born and raised in N.E. Iowa I and others like me sometimes forget to look around at the beauty and splendor of our little corner. I think we all get a little busy with hectic schedules and the blinders go up. Thankfully just taking the time to go for a hike, walk, run, or bike ride is all you need to do to see what this little piece of heaven has to offer.
I have to say our counties in Iowa have some awesome parks, trails, and water recreation areas (of course I'm partial to the N.E. corner). How can we not spend a day or weekend exploring some of them? The best part is most of them are absolutely free!
I am lucky enough to have one of these trails right in my backyard of Elkader. Pony Hollow Trail is a fantastic 4 mile trail to bike, run, and walk. This pea-gravel trail is well-maintained by Clayton County Conservation staff. It follows the Robert's Creek and is surrounded by acres of hard-wood trees.
If you would like to experience this trail during a race come join us in Elkader July 20th for the 25th Annual Shed Your Threads 5K/10K. I promise it is a great experience running or walking on this trail with a hundred other people. You can't miss the beauty of the area while breathing in the fresh country air (some of us breathing more heavily than others). This race is to encourage fitness and wellness in our community of Elkader. Please visit this website for more information www.elkaderfitness.com.
