6 Great Places to Cross Country Ski in Decorah and Winneshiek County

Winter is here! Snow has fallen! It’s time to enjoy the silent sport of cross country skiing. And Decorah is a great place to do it. The scenic beauty of this area is evident at this time of year, just as much as it is during the other seasons. Thanks to the Decorah Parks and Recreation Department, many of Decorah’s city parklands are groomed and tracked when there is sufficient snow. Those parallel tracks make skiing so much easier.

Here they are. Six great places to cross country ski in Decorah and Winneshiek County:

(We're talking about groomed/tracked trails here, folks.)

1. Decorah Community Prairie (It's flat, with mowed grass trails the remainder of the year.

2. Palisades Park (The actual road through the park is a bit challenging uphill, but then you get all the fun of going downhill!

3. Van Peenan Park (This park boasts lot of variety. It's up in the hills just northeast of Decorah.

4. Parts of the Trout Run Trail (This incredible Northeast Iowa trail runs along the Upper Iowa River and Trout Run Trout Stream.)

5. Luther College Walking Trail (This five-mile trail winds along the Upper Iowa River and around the college's athletic fields.)

6. Lake Meyer (These trails are tracked by the Winneshiek County Conservation staff.)

More information and maps visit the City of Decorah website.

Don’t have your own equipment? Have never skied, but would like to try?

Skis, poles, and boots can all be rented from Decorah Bicycles!

Also, there is a Cross-Country Ski/Snowshoe Clinic scheduled for Sunday, Jan 15 at 2pm at the Lake Meyer Campground shop. Equipment will be available to try and basic instruction will be given through the Winneshiek County Conservation Board.

Beat cabin fever! Embrace winter! Get out and enjoy gliding through the snow as you take in the scenic area trails.

I don't think skiing is going to be good in this winter as there are many threats of landsliding the mountain areas of the country. Visit for more info. I would love to stay at home rather then going for skiing.
