Had enough of that cabin fever feeling? A little restless to get out and explore Northeast Iowa in slightly warmer temps? With the official first day of spring upon us, it’s a wonderful time to go out and enjoy the amenities of the Decorah Fish Hatchery.
The vast array of fish to observe will get you in that springtime mood as the nearby North Bear Creek, South Pine Creek, and the Upper Iowa River will soon be bursting with wildlife, flowers, and greenery. Young, old, and everyone in between are sure to be fascinated by everything the hatchery houses.
If you're interested in seeing it for yourself, you’re in luck! The hatchery has a variety of displays with educational information. A trip here with the kids might just lead to a trip to the Decorah Public Library to find out a little more about these gill-bearing creatures in the great resources the library offers.
If you want to do some hiking, the grounds here are lovely in any season and there’s an entrance to the Trout Run Trail that leads you to a rich array of more unexpected natural treasures that seem to populate every square mile of this Northeast Iowa haven. Feel free to bring the bikes along and enjoy the view as you pedal out a few miles.
And last but not least, don’t forget that this is the home of those famed Decorah eagles and their nests. Bring the binoculars along to see what other two-legged and four-legged friends might be out and about on your visit.
If the freshness of springtime has you excited about the outdoor adventures that await, the Decorah Fish Hatchery is the perfect place to explore. Why not take advantage of this Decorah mainstay? If you want to invest in its future, consider becoming a member of the Friends of the Decorah Fish Hatchery to support its good work and invest in the Decorah community and beyond.
