The Whippy Dip on College Drive in Decorah has been a steadfast staple in the city for a long time. When I was a college student many years ago, it was definitely a preferred place to visit. My friends and I would take a little stroll from campus in the late spring months and enjoy a cool treat to break up the determined focus of diligent studying. For some adventurous youths, it served as a richly deserved break from a grueling round of extreme Frisbee on the library lawn.
Once our favored destination was reached, the varied choices of ice cream delights always provided a rather difficult decision, but I quickly settled on a top pick--a hot fudge, banana, and marshmallow crème sundae. It was a bit decadent, but I enjoyed every bite of dairy goodness. As a Wisconsin native, how could I not? Once we'd finished our delicious desserts, the thought of studying a few more hours on a Saturday seemed a lot more palatable.
If my old favorite doesn’t seem likely to become your new favorite, that’s okay because there are many things from which to choose. Perhaps you’d like a quick lunch before heading off for a day of shopping downtown. Feel free to fill up on the vast array of warm eats such American classics like burgers and fries. Maybe you’re just passing through town after hitting a local county fair. The whole family is sure to find something to love from a vanilla cone to a banana split and every option in between. Or maybe that three-hour hike next to the Upper Iowa calls for a celebration. A chocolate malt might be just the ticket! So, stop by, chat a while, and enjoy a refreshing treat or a full meal. Enjoy their offerings while the lazy days of summer are still here.
