I'm here to tell you about a little place I like to call home.
Well, they probably wouldn't like it if I moved on in, though I'm always sore to leave when it's time. But perhaps the sentiment is enough. I'm talking, of course, about the Decorah Public Library.
Here's a little something to know about the library, straight from the site itself:
The history of Decorah Public Library dates back to 1892 and the Columbian club (study club) at the Unitarian Church. The Columbian Club was responsible for the collection until October 28, 1893, when the Public Library Association was formed. The first library housed 69 books, rent-free, in the Marsh Music Store located on Water Street. Over the years the Decorah Public Library was housed in a number of locations including the Winneshiek County Courthouse basement.
As you can see, it's a long history. A well-earned one as well. It made its way into our hearts, that's for sure.
With that said, I've come to tell you about two other little places to call home as well, if you'd like to be permanent adopters of books in Decorah. If the library isn't your style, please check out...
Dragonfly Books is a family-owned general interest bookstore located on Water Street in downtown Decorah, Iowa. We specialize in local and regional books, organic gardening, sustainable living, signed first editions, Scandinavian interest, mysteries, literary fiction, poetry, children's books, young adult, cooking, and other categories.
Founded in 1966, this bookstore has been a magical place for thousands of children and adults alike throughout the years. In April 2003, the Palacios family, by way of our then 9-year old daughter Jessica’s letter-to-the-editor, bought the business from founder Jane Humphrey.
These three places are a great place to start if you'd like to hit the pages in Decorah! I'm sure if you look hard enough, you'll see a book or two by authors from our beloved region as well.
