While I haven't explored all it has to offer, I've delighted in walking along Trout Run Trail in Decorah. As a Luther alumna, I like to get back to Decorah as often as I can. There is definitely a feeling of "home" for me among the bluffs and the Upper Iowa River.
I took the above photo along a section of the trail that follows the rise of the bluff. I love the natural wonder and the physical challenge that seems inherent in the varied terrain of Trout Run and how I feel refreshed from spending even a brief amount of time out on the trail. It really is a little gem of Decorah and it's a great way to get to know the variety of flora and fauna that grace this little pocket of Northeast Iowa.
I recommend getting out there and enjoying it if you've never been. Then return, to see its ever-changing landscape and charm if you've already tested it out. It's definitely an experience that can be taken in solo or with a group of friends, depending on your preferences. The trail is well-maintained and I love the wonderful vistas of the surrounding landscape that it lets me enjoy. You certainly don't need to have a bike to take in the scenery and challenges that it offers. I think walking it allows me to soak up all the treasures the trail offers much more and provides gorgeous opportunities to take my smartphone out and snap away when a stunning overlook takes my breath away. Beneath the river and the bluffs, Trout Run Trail really offers some swonderful opportunities for photography buffs.
So, get out there and enjoy. Happy trails!
