Great Greek food in Iowa? Believe it! On the west end of Dubuque Iowa, just off Highway 20, is a lovely little family-owned restaurant called Wacker Plaza Cafe.
The Food: I especially like their gyros, which are the tastiest in town thanks to the chef’s special blend of spices and preparation. Their secret recipe, tzatziki sauce is so good that some people order it even if they do not have a Greek item in their order. The soups are homemade, and breakfast is served all the time. The baklava is great, and amazing when still warm from the oven!
About this Fantastic Iowa Family: The restaurant owned and operated by the Kurutsides Family. Kosta is the family patriarch and head chef. Katherine is the café manager and Kosta's wife. When he is not filing movies for PKPFilms their eldest son, Paul, can be found wielding a spatula alongside his father. Their youngest son Tony assists in all parts of the family business. They enjoy having families come in and when he can, Kosta comes out of the kitchen to chat with the customers.
How Does it Feel? The decor includes large prints of images from Kosta's home country, Greece! Katherine's sunny smile and warm hospitality are everything you might expect of a person native to "old world charm." In Katherine's case, she is from Poland. If you come visit often enough, she might tell you the sweet story of how they met and fell in love after immigrating to the US.
