It always amazes me how people in small towns come together for betterment of the community as well as its beatification.
Wadena is one such town. Recently the Wadena Illyria Betterment Committee, held their Santa Day Event at the Wadena Fire Station. Edwin Gage is the President of the Committee. The event was not only for Wadena, but for surrounding areas, as well. Businesses and residents donated to the event making it all possible. Some of the donations included fancy porcelain dolls, stuffed animals, and other toys. Food donations included hams, turkeys and beef roasts. Refreshments were served which included many favorite Christmas cookie recipes, hot cocoa, cider, and coffee. Much like a big Christmas party, no one left without something.
Not one adult or child was left out. It is always nice to see an event like this bringing people together. Some of the sponsors who donated to the event were Tony’s Locker, The Barney Burger, Deer Ridge Campground, Elgin State Bank along with many others. At the end of the event, bags of peanuts, candy, and fruit, were handed out to the crowd. What I like about these events is that no one wants to take full credit and seems more comfortable passing it on to someone else. Sponsors and the people who make an event like this come together do need recognition for what they do, because without them, events like this one in Wadena would never happen and make so many people smile. Along with Santa Day at the fire station, the committee hosts an Easter egg hunt in April and an annual Halloween party. They have a breakfast the first Sunday in May and the third Sunday in September. They organize the Wadena Day parade as well as having a roast beef dinner on the same day.
