Join Augustus Gloop, Mike Teavee, Violet Beauregarde, Veruca Salt, and Charlie Bucket as their lives turn upside down with the opening of one chocolate bar! Show dates are Sept. 29, 30, Oct. 1, 2, 6, 7, and 8. Sept. 29 and Oct. 2 shows are matinees at 2:00 PM and all other shows are at 7:30 PM. "Willy Wonka" is a musical based on the book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," by Roald Dahl.
The Opera House Players (OHP) show features 21 students and only 13 adults, as well as over 30 cast members from 11 different communities, including: Elkader, Volga, Guttenberg, McGregor, Monona, Prairie du Chien, Wauzeka, Postville, Garber, Garnavillo, and Edgewood. Shawn Zeeh of Wauzeka, WI, is performing the plum role of “Willy Wonka," and Alivia Keppler of Elkader, Iowa, will perform as Charlie Bucket.
Cheri Moser, co-director of the musical, said the kids will be the stars of the show. "The kids have learned a combined 11 dance numbers! They have all been fantastic to work with because they are so eager to learn everything. Co-director Jonathon Moser and I both grew up as OHP theater kids, so our favorite part is watching and knowing they are building friendships that could last a lifetime!" Moser said.
Moser said the audience is in for a special treat. "This show has lighting effects, a huge number of set changes, snow, fog, dance, and more. If you know the movie, you know that Violet (Kalie Jaster) has to blow up into a blueberry, Augustus (Max Koeller) has to shoot through a chocolate pipe, Veruca (Brenna Buckman) has to fall into a chute, Mike Teavee (Abby Schellhorn) has to miniaturize, and Charlie Bucket (Alivia Keppler) and Grandpa Joe (Mark Yackel-Juleen) have to fly into the sky after they drink the fizzy lifting drink. And even more exciting, our Willy Wonka himself (Shawn Zeeh) has to take one lucky ticket winner for a ride in the flying Wonkavator before the curtain closes!" Moser said.
Set Work by the Numbers:
- 17 scenery drops that come down from the fly space
- 14 medium set pieces
- 5 large set pieces
- 4 cast members that will “fly” during the show
- And many more special effects!
